The Perineum is an area of the skin located between the rectum and the vagina. This area commonly suffers from tearing and cutting during childbirth as well as excess and loose skin of the labia major – the outer lips – and the labia minora – the inner lips from aging. However, these issues can be resolved via laser perineoplasty.
The Procedure
Through the procedure of laser perineoplasty, a plastic surgeon will tighten the loose and sagging skin to make the vaginal area appear normal. Many times this procedure is accompanied by vaginoplasty in order to tighten the entire vaginal canal, creating a more snug opening. The end result of laser perineoplasty is a younger, rejuvenated appearance of the vulva and surrounding skin.
Laser perineoplasty does not require any surgical incisions, making this procedure relatively noninvasive. However, patients will be given local anesthesia and sometimes sedation will be necessary, depending on the patient. The entire laser procedure lasts approximately 45 minutes and does not require repeat sessions to complete.
The Recovery Period
The majority of patients are allowed to resume normal, daily activities 1-3 days after the procedure’s completion. Many women experience swelling and redness in the vaginal area, which usually resolves 1-2 after laser perineoplasty. It is recommended that patients refrain from certain activities and lifting heavy objects during the recovery period.
The Benefits
Women who undergo this procedure are freed from chaffing during intercourse and daily activities, which is all too common with those who suffer from sagging and loose vaginal tissue. Due to the tightening of the labias and vulva, women who have laser perineoplasty will feel increased friction during intercourse, making the entire experience more enjoyable for both partners. And women who suffer from incontinence due to aging or childbirth will experience less frequent occurrences of leakage, especially when paired with other laser vaginal procedures such as vaginoplasty and labiaplasty.
The Risks
The risks of laser perineoplasty are slight and most resolve themselves during the typical recovery period. Common symptoms women may experience include laser burns, occasional bruising, slight discomfort, swelling, and redness. If extensive vaginal work is necessary, the patient may need to stay in the hospital overnight and take several days off from work to recuperate.
